When Venting Turns

The facts didn’t change.
The margin did.

One bad moment can change the tone of an entire day.

Even senior leaders vent.
Sometimes that’s necessary.

Pressure accumulates. Stakes are high.

Sometimes a conversation is just a release — a way to clear frustration before moving forward more clearly. I’ve seen that done well.

I’ve also learned how quickly that line can move.

In one moment that stayed with me, I was on the receiving end of a conversation that began as venting.

The facts hadn’t changed.
The context hadn’t changed.
What changed was the margin.

Later, it became clear the day had started under strain.
Little rest.
Stress carried in from outside the office.
Tolerance was lower than usual.
Small points landed harder than intended.

That was the lesson.

Senior leaders are human.
They need room to vent.

But venting carries weight.
And when it turns into reaction, words stop being temporary.

Knowing when to pause isn’t weakness.
It’s how leaders protect margin before pressure becomes a decision.
